IIM-B makes summer internships optional for experienced students

AHMEDABAD: Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore (IIM-B) has decided to make summer internships optional for students with prior job experience after feedback from students indicated that the two-month training was suited only for fresh passouts. The IIM-B move may lead to a similar change at other B-Schools, though no institute ET spoke to said it would follow suit immediately. The number of experienced students is rising at all top B-Schools — almost 25% — as most grads prefer to go for management education only after working for a couple of years.
IIM-B has communicated the decision to its students. "We have taken the important decision and made internships optional for students who have worked for at least 34 months. Experienced students from earlier batches said they did not learn much more during the internships. We are now exploring options on engaging the students during these two months when no teaching takes place on the campus," Sapna Agarawal, head of IIM-B career development services (CDS) told ET.

IIM-B To Open Second Campus In Anekal

BANGALORE: The Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore (IIM-B), the country's third oldest IIM, will spread its wings to Anekal.
The state government has leased 110 acres for the second campus of IIM-B at Mahanthalingapura in Anekal taluk (Jigani hobli), which will be the hub of future expansion activities of the 38-year-old B-school.
The new campus __ almost the same size as that of the existing one in South Bangalore __ will host IIM-B's proposed incubation centre aimed at encouraging entrepreneurship besides executive education programmes. Unlike IIM-Ahmedabad and IIM-Lucknow which have opened campuses in other states, IIM-B says it doesn't favour having split campuses in other Indian cities.

2011 IIMB Management Review

Aims and Scope
IIMB Management Review (IMR) is a quarterly journal brought out by the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore. Addressed to management practitioners, researchers and academics, IMR aims to engage rigorously with practices, concepts and ideas in the field of management, with an emphasis on providing managerial insights, in a format that is accessible to a wide audience.

To this end, IMR invites manuscripts that provide novel managerial insights in any of the core business functions. The manuscript should be rigorous, that is, the findings should be supported by either empirical data or a well-justified theoretical model, and well written. While these two requirements are necessary for acceptance, they do not guarantee acceptance. The sole criterion for publication is contribution to the extant management literature.

Although all manuscripts are welcome, our special emphasis is on papers that focus on emerging economies throughout the world. Such papers may either improve our understanding of markets in such economies through novel analyses or build models by taking into account the special characteristics of such economies to provide guidance to managers.

Full-length research articles (up to 10,000 words) on all the business functions, aspects of policy and management pedagogy form the core of the journal; at present focused discussion and interview papers, and book reviews are also featured.

IMR is a peer-reviewed journal and follows a 'double blind' review process. All papers submitted to IMR go through a preliminary review at the editorial desk and those considered appropriate are sent to an Associate Editor. On the recommendation of the Associate Editor, the article may be rejectedor assigned to two reviewers.

IIM-B mines Kudremukh case to sensitize students

BANGALORE: It's not all profit and growth for these IIM-B students. They are studying the development vs environment battle, with the Kudremukh issue being turned into a case study.
'Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited: The Death Knell and Beyond', an elaborate case study on the conflict about mining in the eco-sensitive zone of the Western Ghats, and consequent closure by the Supreme Court to stop mining, has drawn the interest of managers and business experts on how well such conflicts can be handled.
"This case study was taken up because it is one case where the mining mafia has been taught a lesson by the Supreme Court. It's a very interesting case and students need to be sensitized to it. The Bellary brothers in Karnataka or Posco in Orissa are much bigger cases. The issue is that the system of management is increasing the inequality between haves and have-nots. People started asserting their rights and management students have to understand these issues. I hope the future generation of managers will be much more sensitive," adjunct faculty at IIM-B, marketing and corporate entrepreneurship expert DVR Seshadri told TOI.

IIM-B beckons NRI executives

India calling is the way forward for the 50 executives at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIM-B) who returned to the country after a decade and more of living and working on foreign shores.

For these senior level managers, who are currently part of the executive post graduate programme in manage ment at the IIM-B, the longing to work in their own country that is opening up plenty of opportunities, got them to pack their bags and come back home.

For Mr Jeffrey Alapatt, an Irish national, working overseas for 11 years, stagnation at the job, made him realise that for career progression, India was the place to be. “I needed to build a better brand for myself and India is offering a lot more for an IT professional like me. For me, it is worth taking time out from the job to get acclimatised to the Indian industry where I hope to continue working in the future,“ said Mr Alapatt.

And with Indian companies going global, the opportunities it presents here, they felt, are far greater. For many, the idea behind studying and working abroad was to gain global knowledge and ultimately bring it back to India at some point. The 21st centu ry belongs to India, according to Mr Ashwin Pai, a permanent resident of Singapore. He added, “And I want to be a part of the story.“

Additionally, the programme at IIMB focuses on the BRIC nations that reflect the emerging markets.“

Apart from the opportunities the Indian economy presents in almost every sector, some feel the need to reconnect with their roots and contribute to the society they have been raised.

IIM-B Upgrades I-T, India Post Officials' Managerial Skills

BANGALORE: Leadership training may be new to officials working for the country's largest savings bank, India Post Office, or the income tax department, but the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore in association with top foreign universities, is all set to change that.
Some of IIM-B's professors have taken upon themselves the task of aligning the aspirations and managerial skills of employees to roles that The India Post and the Central Board of Direct Tax have charted out for them.
"If a Wipro or an Infosys can have training on client delivery models then why can't public institutes like the India Post Office?" asks Vasanthi Srinivasan, professor of organisational behaviour and human resource management, and faculty coordinator for the project in IIM-B. The training for India Post staffers began nearly six months ago, while that for income tax officials began on March 28. Through this programme, the Central Board of Direct Tax aims at improving employee efficiency and map the available talent.

          IIMB Architecture

IIM Bangalore campus of the famous architect B V Doshi, and designed as part of the conversation between the Officer and the professionals. Campus, targets, and the academic and administrative block architecture students and practical architect, a case has become a Pilgrimage of the architecture. completed in 1983, the original stone architecture now Greens are exactly the same b v dosha intends. Doshi, v. b. describes the architecture of the building, in his own words.

At one with nature Doshi b.v..

The Emperor Akbar, Fatehpur Sikri are known as jurisprudence, to 16. Since the 1970s. Does not appear to have remained liikkumavapautta for several years, is highly respected in his field, in the interest of clarity, the architectural style and in particular to their location for your organization data. This is a problem known, extend, or add the buildings and their related (1) and additional information about how to resolve to ensure that all individual components in the complex in a sense exceeding the fabric can be attached. No surprise that, for the same instruments in time for the allocation of Fatehpur Sikri of tasks and integrate with the complex of different buildings are the same as the temples of the India of the South.

Responses to the main corridors to eliminate movement is achieved with the adoption of a system. And extended to the activities of the network spaces between fields of activity in the courts of runners. This is the first meaning, the living conditions of the courts, the growth and continuity to reproduce subtle connections.

Fatehpur Sikri was a factor in their relatively small buildings, but the presence of strong for me, I felt a special affinity. Makes it possible to finance the construction of the umbilical cord, heaven and Earth, such as the extended family, which is a modest affair, with corridor. Even if a separate and still tenuously linked.

The development of academic programmes, IIMB that will stretch and changes over the years, insisted on such an approach. Bangalore the climate is very pleasant and the city is full of lush green grass and trees. That is why in this project, including the external space, and the relationship between buildings in exchange for the climate of Bangalore ' build ' is allowed outside of academic classes. Functional and physical characteristics of the design-related local traditions such as the flag room, Court and extensive plantations.

Because these local elements in itself not all beat, the project also contains long and unusually high (three floors), corridors, with myriad vistas local points for generating dialogue with a car. These corridors are sometimes, sometimes open with only PERGOLI and sometimes partially conceals a skylight. To increase the spatial experience, the width of the corridors in many places, casual interaction developed or sit, that allow to one or more destination. Access to classes and administrative offices was provided by these links, as well as to a constant activity. Thanks to the different rhythm of solids and voids or walls and opening up, in combination with direct or characters at different times of the day and the seasons change indirect natural light these links and offer students and teachers the opportunity to feel the presence of nature, even if they are within. If you create such an environment, enriched, activities within the framework of the building because it worldwide are one of the. Architectural links appear and disappear, and is a feeling and not, this is the real suspected. In the morning and evening golden rays of the Sun reflects in the glazed Windows and corridors, reinforced the judges of the Central classrooms, give the feeling that it unknown inner one by advertisers.

          IIMB Identity

IIMB has a strong brand identity with a logo that has great recall. The sun symbol has been designed by the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, and has been in use since 1994.
The concept of the current logo is based on a line from the Sanskrit shloka which has become the motto of IIMB: Tejasvi navadhitamastu. This line, derived from the peace invocation of several Upanishads, translates as: “Let our (the teacher and the taught) learning be radiant”.
AUM saha navavatu, saha nau bhunaktu
          Saha veeryam karvaavahai

          Tejasvi naavadhitamastu
          maa vid vishaa va hai
          AUM shaantih, shaantih, shaantih
Let us together be protected and let us together be nourished by God's blessings / Let us together join our mental forces in strength for the benefit of humanity /Let our efforts at learning be luminous and filled with joy, and endowed with the force of purpose /Let us never be poisoned with the seeds of hatred for anyone / Let there be peace and serenity in all the three universes.

          History Of IIMB

After 1947, the Government of independent India will focus on the development of indigenous science and technology. Technology base, which is created, it became clear that the country needed to augment management talent at the same time and resources. This led To the creation of the Indian institutes of management in the country. Indian Institute of Management Bangalore was founded in 1973.
The following are excerpts from an article we take you to the early years: IIMB
          Cultivation of IIMB-G v K RAO

Two were Management Institute by the Indian Government in Ahmedabad and the second in Kolkata started. The Government of Karnataka India is ready to recognize that a similar device should be performed in Bangalore.

The first two institutions were based on the model in the United States and meet the needs for qualified managers, in particular in the private sector. Persons in the IIMA and IIMC may, for various reasons, should take into account the institutions of the public sector. One of the main reasons for the low range of remuneration in the public sector, in comparison with the private sector, in particular in international organisations. So even at the time, the public sector should be the heights of the economy. Initiated a number of institutions, public sector and large investments, both central and State Governments, respectively.

It was therefore of the opinion that the Institute is set up in Bangalore in such a way as to prepare competent persons to meet the needs of the public sector must be developed. Institutions which were kept in mind that the signs bodies for electricity, water supply boards and HMT, BEML, ITI, road transport, businesses, municipal companies and such. Significant investments were made in these sectors and also the competent persons to tackle things.

Thus, the idea was to offer a bright young people, who were expected to occupy important leadership positions in public sector management courses in the proposed Institute in Bangalore. This issue was examined in various ad hoc committees established by the Government of the State, and it was reprinted with the Government of India.

100 acres of land, suggested the Queensland Government Bangalore Institute of Rs. 40 lakhs corpus presented the costs and contributions. Discussions, Dr l s Chandrakanth and Mr. Ravi Mathai.

Mr T yotklong II as President A. first N S Ramaswamy who was then Director of NITIE has been appointed the first Director. To prepare numerous tasks and institutional building opened by Mrs Indira Gandhi, then Prime Minister, on 28 October 1973.

The Institute was started in St. Joseph School of Commerce and some other buildings that have been in the rental. Detected a number of problems, but they were pretty well-handled. The most important issues was opposition to the institutions of the public sector for the appointment of graduates that have arisen from the IIMB EXECUTIVE MBA in spite of its guidelines for the public sector.

Bannerghatta road in Bangalore is offered by the State Government and the land THEY are EXECUTIVE mba is a cost for selected.

Stone, Doshi and Bhalla as architects and very good plans were drawn up.

I had the privilege of being associated with IIMB EXECUTIVE MBA during the early years, as a member of the Board of Governors and as President during the years 1991 and 1996.

Mr. n. confirmation, the first Director of the organization is not a significant work of the Institute. Prof. Philip questions some of the other part of the discipline and related matters. Dr K R S Murthy succeeded Prof. Philip. He worked in the period 1992-1997 and the Institute for construction excellence. It was the same great success story.

The aim is to cater to the needs of the public sector cannot be fulfilled. Thus, the Institute began gradually to meet the changing demands of the Indian situation. In 1991, ideas about the development of the country had also changed, and the liberalization and globalization was accepted as the need for the moment, which had its own impact on how the IIMB has occurred in recent years 7-8. This cannot be regarded as a diversion from the original intention. It is an organizational change caused by the situation, if anything, shows maturity adjustment to bring the requirements of the times.

The campus has developed also. Created a large number of trees planted and a pleasant atmosphere. The library is very well planned. Classrooms and dormitories accepts the master plan with everyone.

The product shall not contain good material IIMB, well trained good place nailed the nationality of the basics. Is very consistent with the purpose of institution: Center of excellence, to choose the best, is a highly-qualified professionals and responsible citizens, and they work well.
