IIM-B makes summer internships optional for experienced students

AHMEDABAD: Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore (IIM-B) has decided to make summer internships optional for students with prior job experience after feedback from students indicated that the two-month training was suited only for fresh passouts. The IIM-B move may lead to a similar change at other B-Schools, though no institute ET spoke to said it would follow suit immediately. The number of experienced students is rising at all top B-Schools — almost 25% — as most grads prefer to go for management education only after working for a couple of years.

IIM-B has communicated the decision to its students. "We have taken the important decision and made internships optional for students who have worked for at least 34 months. Experienced students from earlier batches said they did not learn much more during the internships. We are now exploring options on engaging the students during these two months when no teaching takes place on the campus," Sapna Agarawal, head of IIM-B career development services (CDS) told ET.

IIM-B To Open Second Campus In Anekal

BANGALORE: The Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore (IIM-B), the country's third oldest IIM, will spread its wings to Anekal.
The state government has leased 110 acres for the second campus of IIM-B at Mahanthalingapura in Anekal taluk (Jigani hobli), which will be the hub of future expansion activities of the 38-year-old B-school.
The new campus __ almost the same size as that of the existing one in South Bangalore __ will host IIM-B's proposed incubation centre aimed at encouraging entrepreneurship besides executive education programmes. Unlike IIM-Ahmedabad and IIM-Lucknow which have opened campuses in other states, IIM-B says it doesn't favour having split campuses in other Indian cities.

IIM-B mines Kudremukh case to sensitize students

BANGALORE: It's not all profit and growth for these IIM-B students. They are studying the development vs environment battle, with the Kudremukh issue being turned into a case study.
'Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited: The Death Knell and Beyond', an elaborate case study on the conflict about mining in the eco-sensitive zone of the Western Ghats, and consequent closure by the Supreme Court to stop mining, has drawn the interest of managers and business experts on how well such conflicts can be handled.
"This case study was taken up because it is one case where the mining mafia has been taught a lesson by the Supreme Court. It's a very interesting case and students need to be sensitized to it. The Bellary brothers in Karnataka or Posco in Orissa are much bigger cases. The issue is that the system of management is increasing the inequality between haves and have-nots. People started asserting their rights and management students have to understand these issues. I hope the future generation of managers will be much more sensitive," adjunct faculty at IIM-B, marketing and corporate entrepreneurship expert DVR Seshadri told TOI.

IIM-B beckons NRI executives

India calling is the way forward for the 50 executives at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIM-B) who returned to the country after a decade and more of living and working on foreign shores.

For these senior level managers, who are currently part of the executive post graduate programme in manage ment at the IIM-B, the longing to work in their own country that is opening up plenty of opportunities, got them to pack their bags and come back home.

For Mr Jeffrey Alapatt, an Irish national, working overseas for 11 years, stagnation at the job, made him realise that for career progression, India was the place to be. “I needed to build a better brand for myself and India is offering a lot more for an IT professional like me. For me, it is worth taking time out from the job to get acclimatised to the Indian industry where I hope to continue working in the future,“ said Mr Alapatt.

And with Indian companies going global, the opportunities it presents here, they felt, are far greater. For many, the idea behind studying and working abroad was to gain global knowledge and ultimately bring it back to India at some point. The 21st centu ry belongs to India, according to Mr Ashwin Pai, a permanent resident of Singapore. He added, “And I want to be a part of the story.“

Additionally, the programme at IIMB focuses on the BRIC nations that reflect the emerging markets.“

Apart from the opportunities the Indian economy presents in almost every sector, some feel the need to reconnect with their roots and contribute to the society they have been raised.

IIM-B Upgrades I-T, India Post Officials' Managerial Skills

BANGALORE: Leadership training may be new to officials working for the country's largest savings bank, India Post Office, or the income tax department, but the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore in association with top foreign universities, is all set to change that.
Some of IIM-B's professors have taken upon themselves the task of aligning the aspirations and managerial skills of employees to roles that The India Post and the Central Board of Direct Tax have charted out for them.
"If a Wipro or an Infosys can have training on client delivery models then why can't public institutes like the India Post Office?" asks Vasanthi Srinivasan, professor of organisational behaviour and human resource management, and faculty coordinator for the project in IIM-B. The training for India Post staffers began nearly six months ago, while that for income tax officials began on March 28. Through this programme, the Central Board of Direct Tax aims at improving employee efficiency and map the available talent.

IMR Doctoral Students Conference 2011 In IIMB

IIMB Management Review (IIMR) at Indian Institute of Management (IIMB) is set to host the IMR Doctoral Students Conference (IMRDC) on November 11-12, 2011. The Conference on Management Studies aims to bring together, annually, doctoral students affiliated to institutions across India for an event of paper presentations, publication-oriented development and interactions with industry. IIMR is the Institute's quarterly journal.

With a view to alert and sensitise young scholars to the pursuit of the rich research opportunities in the Indian context and to encourage them to pursue these opportunities, IIMB Management Review (IMR) initiated and instituted the country's first annual doctoral students' conference for management scholars in 2009.

The objectives of the Doctoral Conference are:

• to identify and encourage the most interesting and important research being done by doctoral students in management/ business schools across the country;
• to enable the authors of the identified papers to engage with leading academicians in India and abroad in a focused manner and to gain developmental inputs for their research;
• to provide a publication outlet for promising research by inviting authors of the best papers to submit their shortlisted work to IMR;
• to provide a platform of exchange between doctoral students/ academic research and industry practices and requirements and other stakeholders to identify new applications and avenues of research.
