After 1947, focused the government of independent India on the development of indigenous science and technology. Was created as a technological basis, it became clear that the country simultaneously to complement management talent and resources are needed. This led to the founding of the Indian Institute of Management conducted in the country. The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore was established in 1973.

Two institutes of management have been launched by the Government of India - one in Ahmedabad and the other in Calcutta. The government of Karnataka was interested in seeing a similar device to be launched in Bangalore.
The first two institutes were among the models in the U.S. resident and meet the need of trained managers, especially in the private sector. IIMA and IIMC trained people in it could not, for various reasons, be considered in the public sector institutions. One of the main reasons was the low level of remuneration in the public sector, compared with the private sector, especially in multinational organizations. This, even though at the same time was to be the public sector in the commanding heights of the economy. Begun a series of public sector institutions, and were each made huge investments by both the federal and state governments.
It was therefore of the opinion that the institution be placed in Bangalore should be developed in such a way as to the persons responsible for fulfilling the needs of preparing the public sector. The institutions that were to keep in mind, facilities such as power stations, water supply and HMT, ITI, BEML, roads, businesses, local businesses, and the like. Substantial investments were made in such sectors and they also competent people to manage the affairs wanted.
So the idea of management courses at the proposed institute in Bangalore was to offer talented young people, who are expected to occupy key leadership positions were in the public sector. The matter discussed in various ad hoc committees had been created by the state government, and it was taken over by the Government of India.
Planned for the Bangalore Institute of the Government of Karnataka offered 100 acres of land free of cost and a contribution to the corpus Rs lakhs 30th Discussions with Dr. LS Chandrakanth, and Mr. Ravi Mathai place.
Mr TA Pai agreed to become the first chairman. NS Ramaswamy, who was then director of the NiTi, the first director. Significant preparatory work was done, and the new Institute was adopted by Mrs. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister, 28 Inaugurated in October 1973.
The institute was started in St. Joseph's College of Commerce, and several other buildings that were rented out. A number of problems were occurring, but are treated quite well. The biggest difficulty faced the reluctance of public sector institutions to the graduates, which emerged from the IIMB, despite their orientation in the public sector to be appointed.
The land was offered by the state government selected on Bannerghatta Road in Bangalore and given free of charge at IIMB.
Stein, Doshi and Bhalla has been appointed as architects and created very good plans.
I had the privilege of being associated with the IIMB in the early years, as a member of the Board of Governors and as chairman from 1991 to 1996.
Mr NS Ramaswamy was the first director of a lot of work for the organization of the Institute. Prof. Philip covers some other problems such as discipline and related matters. Dr K R S Murthy succeeded Prof. Philip. He worked in the period from 1992 to 1997 and was primarily responsible for setting up an institute of excellence. It has been a steady history of achievement.
The intention to meet the needs of the public sector's needs remained unmet. Little by little, the institute started the changing demands of the Indian situation to do justice. Until 1991, the ideas of development were also changes in the country, and had accepted the liberalization and globalization as an order of the day, their own effect on the manner in which the IIMB has worked in the last 7-8 years. This can not be considered a distraction from the original intention. It is an organic change that brought the situation which, if anything, shows the maturity of the institution to adapt to the demands of the time.
The campus has developed well. A large number of trees were planted and created a pleasant atmosphere. The library is very well planned. The classrooms and dormitories all comply with the Master Plan.
IIMB a product is bound to be good material, well trained, instead of with the basics of good citizenship nailed. This is very much in line with the objective of the institution: To be a center of excellence, choose the best, prove first-class professionals and responsible citizens and expect them to work well.
